🐴 What Is a Horse Bit?

A horse bit is the part of the bridle that is placed inside the horse’s mouth and allows communication between the rider and the horse through the reins.

A bit mainly acts on:

• the tongue

• the bars (toothless areas of the jaw)

• the lips

and in some cases:

• the poll

• the chin (through leverage)

👉 The correct horse bit should be comfortable and suited to the horse’s mouth anatomy and training level.

1️⃣ Bits Without Leverage (Snaffle Bits)

Snaffle bits provide direct action: the pressure applied by the rider is the same pressure felt by the horse.

• One joint

• Pressure on tongue and bars

• May create the nutcracker effect

• Suitable for many horses, but not all

🔹 Double Jointed Snaffle

• Two joints with a central plate

Leverage bits multiply rein pressure using shanks.

🔹 Pelham Bit

• Combines snaffle and curb action

• Pressure on mouth, poll, and chin

• Can be ridden with one or two reins

🔹 Weymouth Bit (Double Bridle)

• Used together with a bradoon

• Advanced dressage equipment

• Very refined communication

• ❌ Not suitable for beginners

3️⃣ Bitless Bridles

These do not place a bit inside the horse’s mouth.

• Copper / sweet iron: encourages salivation

• Rubber / plastic: softer but usually thicker

Consider:

• the horse’s mouth anatomy (tongue & bars)

• training level of horse and rider

• discipline (hacking, jumping, dressage)

• the horse’s reaction (chewing, opening mouth, tension)

• Very popular for jumping and cross-country
